Taking the Anthology on the Road
Geradine Simkins, editor of Into These Hands, Wisdom From Midwives,

Editor, Geradine Simkins & book endorser Robbie-Davis-Floyd, medical anthropologist, CIMS Conference March 2011

is a captivating public speaker. She appears at national and international professional meetings and conferences. She has designed an expansive book presentation detailing her work as editor of this anthology and sharing the wisdom contained within its pages.

What Matters to Women, Matters to Midwives
The presentation is structured around the anthology themes outlined in the Afterword of the book. In the editing process Geradine analyzed the 25 individual memoirs in the context of the anthology as a whole. She identified common themes of “what matters” to all authors by analyzing what they talked about, how they lived their lives, and how they practiced professionally. She identified 13 persistent themes.

In Essence

The stories deliver a compelling historical perspective on the culture of childbirth in America, insight into what really matters to women, wisdom about how to properly welcome newborns into their families, inspiration about how to courageously take charge of one’s life, and clear guidance for reforming our ailing maternity care system.

A Rose By Any Other Name…”
The book presentation utilizes a different title depending on the audience. It features the life histories of 25 remarkable women in the socio-political context of the past 3-4 decades using text from individual memoirs and photos of the contributing authors. Geradine demonstrates how the memoir authors speak with authority on issues related to women’s health and procreative lives, and how they have been instrumental in shaping the course of modern U.S. midwifery and maternity care practices. Some of the book presentation titles include:
  • Midwives Speak About What Really Matters – 13 Essentials
  • How One Gives Birth, and How One Is Born, Matters Deeply
